Every year, it’s the same story: people set goals and resolutions for the new year. And in almost of the cases, it does not last.

So, should we keep setting new goals every year?

To keep it short, the answer is : yes.

Yes, because any occasion to set new goals is a good one. Any occasion to keep growing is a good occasion.

Yes, because the process itself is positive. It pushes us to reflect on ourselves and set expectations. To renew our energy and self-love. It gives us hope.

And the new year is one of the best moment for that: the synergy is palpable. Many people share their New Year’s resolutions, inspiring others.

And despite the high abandonment rate, some New Year’s resolutions do succeed.

It’s always better to try than not to at all

So yes, let’s keep setting goals for the new year. Even if we know it won’t last, the most important thing is to try, to keep going. To not give up.

Once we’ve tried, we can set regular checkpoints: what worked, what didn’t work? How can we fix it?

Let’s go!

Let’s set our new year goals, and let’s make plan to make them happen:

  • Set measurable goals: This will help you track your progress and stay motivated. For example, instead of setting a goal to “get fit,” set a goal to “do 10 push-ups daily.” Seeing progress will boost your motivation and help you stay on track.
  • Break down your goals into small, achievable steps: This will make them seem less daunting and more realistic. For example, if your goal is to run 5 kilometers daily, start by setting a goal to run 2 kilometers one or two times a week. Once you’ve achieved that goal, you can gradually increase the distance and frequency.
  • Be flexible and willing to adapt your goals as needed: Life happens, and things don’t always go according to plan. If you find that you’re not able to achieve your original goal, don’t give up. Just adjust your goal to something more realistic.

One last piece of advice: don’t wait for the New Year to begin. Any time you feel motivated, start! It’s okay to stumble — just pick yourself up and try again.

Don’t hesitate to start anew whenever the opportunity arises. Whether it’s a new year, a new month, a new week, or even a new day.

And remember, the most important thing is to try. Start small. Try to be consistent and make a review in few weeks.
